Funerals were set to be held Friday for a mother and her 11-year-old daughter who died in a house fire that Reno County authorities allege was set by the woman's son.
The fire broke out at the family's Hutchinson home on Sept. 26, killing the woman and her daughter. The 14-year-old suspect's father was also injured in the fire.
The funerals were scheduled for Friday morning in the central Kansas town, with burials later Friday in McPherson, The Hutchinson News reported.
The family also issued a statement saying while they were "deeply grateful for all the love and support received from friends and the entire Hutchinson community," they were also asking for privacy as they "go through this time of unspeakable pain and heartbreak."
Reno County Prosecutor Keith Schroeder filed a motion earlier this week seeking to charge the 14-year-old as an adult on charges of first-degree murder of his mother and sister and attempted murder of his father.
Schroeder said in the filing the teen should be tried as an adult because he is an extreme danger to the community.
As a juvenile, he would be under the court's jurisdiction until he turns 23. If convicted as an adult, he'd face a life prison sentence.
