The McPherson High School Bullpups, ranked first in Class 4A in the latest rankings from the Kansas Tennis Association, finished in the top three in both Saturday’s McPherson Invitational and Monday’s AVCTL meet in El Dorado.
While no Bullpup took first in the individual competition of Saturday’s McPherson Invitational, they had four top five finishers that gave McPherson a 15-point team win over Derby.
The top placers for MHS Saturday were Ellea Ediger, who went 2-1 and finished second in the singles bracket. Camry Holle and Emily Ediger went 3-1 to finish second in the doubles division.
Brooke Bate and Taylor Swartzendruber had a 2-2 day Saturday to finish fourth, while Katlyn Reifschneider went 3-1, but finished fifth.
Other competitors in the singles bracket for McPherson Saturday were Rachel Ivers (2-2, seventh), Katherine Geist (1-4, eighth) and Shelby Gudenkauf (3-1, 17th).
MHS finished with 87 points, followed by Derby (72), Salina South (54), Hutchinson (47) and Garden City (47).
In Monday’s AVCTL meet, the Bullpups picked up 52 team points, with all competitors again finishing in the top five. It wasn’t enough to overcome powerhouse Wichita collegiate, however, who took the meet with 63 team points, followed by Winfield with 56.
In No. 1 singles play, Ellea Ediger went 2-1 to claim third place, while Reifschneider went 2-1 as well, but finished second in the No. 2 singles bracket.
In doubles play, Holle and Emily Ediger went 2-1 for third place in the No. 1 doubles bracket, while the No. 2 doubles team of Bate and Swartzendruber went also went 2-1 and finished third.
The Pups now gear up for Class 4A Regional play, which they will host at the McPherson High School tennis complex starting Friday morning at 10 a.m. Also participating in the regional are Abilene, Colby, Concordia, Smoky Valley, Chapman, Clay Center Community, Wamego, Russell and Scott Community.
