  • For the second year in a row, the annual Burnin’ Down Main Cook-Off proved to be the biggest in the event’s history.
Ann Engel, executive director of McPherson Main Street, said this year’s event served 435 people up from 272 people last year.
“It was busy the whole time,” Engel said. “I was running back and forth to get more stuff all afternoon. I thought we’d have wristbands left over for next year, but we completely ran out. It turned out to be a really good day.”
In the chili contest, first place went to Red Hot Chili Preppers, second place went to Roadkill Cafe and third place went to Wince Family Dental.
First place in the soup contest went to Mike Waner Automotive, second place went to Peoples Bank & Trust, and Mower Medic snagged third.
In the dessert category, which only had two placings, first place went to Anne Kirchner and second went to Kathy Kessler.
First place winners in the chili and soup competitions took home $500, second took $250 and third took $100.
First place in desserts was worth $100, with second place taking $50.
A $200 team spirit prize was awarded to Wince Family Dental, who cooked and served chili in pirate costumes and a pirate-themed booth.
Engel said the day was a complete success.
“The weather turned out perfect,” Engel said, “and it was the perfect weather for chili and soup.”
Engel also promised to have some recipes up soon on McPherson Main Street’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/visitmac.
