Coming off a long, emotional weekend during the Ottawa Invitational, the McPherson High School volleyball team wasn’t playing at 100 percent, but that didn’t stop them from coming away from a triangular in El Dorado Tuesday with a pair of wins.
The Lady Bullpups, who finished second at Ottawa, defeated Mulvane handily in the first set of the night 25-4, but then slogged their way through a 25-18 win in set two. MHS then defeated El Dorado 25-17, 25-19.
“Apparently the weekend in Ottawa wore us down more than I anticipated,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “It shouldn't surprise me, as we've seen this happen before. However, playing in a big tournament on the road, is still no excuse for not being mentally prepared for two league matches.”
While Doile was unhappy with the overall performance, she was pleased with the effort in the first set against Mulvane.
“Our intensity level was where it needed to be,” Doile said. “Unfortunately on the evening we posted some of the worst statistical #'s on the season. Mentally we struggled to maintain all seven kids' intensity level through the evening. Lack of mental toughness and discipline to maintain a high intensity level, resulted in below average physical results for us.”
The MHS JV squad also swept the triangular, defeating El Dorado (25-16, 25-13) and Mulvane (25-7, 29-27).
“We had a little trouble staying focused and finishing off Mulvane,” JV coach Diane Marshall said. “They played a much better set two, but we need to be more disciplined in finishing.”
The JV squad moves to 19-5 and is off until Tuesday, when they go to Buhler for a triangular that also includes Winfield.
The varsity Pups (26-2), meanwhile have a few days to recoop and prepare for the McPherson Invitational, which will be held Saturday at the MHS Roundhouse.
The Pups, who are ranked No. 1 in the latests KVA poll released Wednesday, will be the top seed in Saturdya’s seven team tournament.
Other teams will be Bishop Carroll (15-5), Salina Central (20-8), Nickerson (12-15), Arkansas City (5-22), Salina South (5-23) and Goddard (4-19).
Pool play begins at 8 a.m., with the Pups opening up with Goddard in the Roundhouse. They will also play Salina Central, Salina South and Nickerson. Courts will be also be set up in the MHS Auxilary Gym.
