  • McPherson High School qualified all six members of its girls’ tennis team for the Class 4A state tournament next week in the first day of the MHS Regional.
Smoky Valley has the possibility of seeing three athletes advance, with all three shooting for a fifth place finish today.
The Bullpups had no troubles, really, as they all advanced over their opponents in two straight sets to make it into today’s semifinals.
In the singles division, Ellea Ediger went 2-0 on the day and will face Chapman’s Rachel Sutter in one of the semifinal matches. Sutter advanced with a win in the quarterfinals against Smoky Valley’s Hannah Morrical. Sutter also went 2-0 on the day Friday.
Morrical, meanwhile, keeps her state hopes alive today, as she will play for fifth place starting this morning against Abilene’s Marissa Shardin.
On the other side of the bracket, McPherson’s Katlyn Reifschneider advanced to the semis after going 2-0 Friday. She will face Abilene’s Kinsey Ford this morning for the right to play in the championship match.
In doubles play, the duo of Brooke Bate and Taylor Swartzendruber went 2-0 Friday, setting up a showdown with the Wamego sister act of Kaylee and Lanie Page, who helped to lead the Red Raiders to the school’s first-ever state basketball championship this past March.
Camry Holle and Emily Ediger will also look at advance to the championship match this morning, as they will face Duer and Heiman from Chapman. Full names were unavailable at press time.
The Chapman team advanced after a closely fought match with the Smoky Valley duo of Annie Reinert and Katie Bellah, who will play in the fifth place bracket for a shot at advancing to state, as well.
Play will begin this morning at around 10 a.m. at the McPherson High School tennis courts. The championship rounds are estimated to begin around 11:30 a.m.
