  • The VAAM Gallery of the McPherson Arts Alliance Inc. in McPherson, presents Oil and Clay, featuring oil paintings by Cozette Christian and clay vessels by Dale Hartley.
A reception for Christian and Hartley will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the VAAM Gallery, 223 S. Main St., McPherson. The public is invited to attend and meet the artists.
Christian studied art in the early ’70s but didn't take up oil painting untill the summer of 2012. She took part in a VAAM workshop with Kim Casebeer, a Kansas landscape artist, and began painting almost daily from that point on.
She found she enjoyed painting outside — “plein aire.” She also exhibits some still life paintings.
Christian prizes the effects of loose quick brush strokes. Her work shows the results of emphasis on shapes, shadows and color and hide the challenges she overcomes painting scenes from her world.
Hartley has a studio in Chase County between Marion and Emporia. Her clay vessels are handbuilt from clay slabs rolled by hand. Some are textured with sands collected from travels.
Hartley then add slips, glazes and enamels to produce surface designs developed from a succession of processes. She fires her clay creations to different temperatures and sometimes add combustibles to affect the firing atmosphere.
For her raku pieces, Hartley may pull the pieces out of the fire and place them in a metal reduction chamber with sawdust, causing them to be reduced or smoked. The smoke turns areas of the clay that are left unglazed black and glazes with copper in them to become a shiny metallic.
Sometimes the pieces are slowly layered to completion, with enamel additions, for example. Dale also exhibits some Flint Hills landscapes at the gallery.
The VAAM Gallery of the McPherson Arts Alliance offers arts classes and other events. The gallery is on the first floor of the McPherson Opera House. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Featured in the McPherson Opera House Heritage Gallery are the paintings of Julie Baldwin. Baldwin’s paintings will be shown until Nov. 1.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, call 620-241-5774 or visit  www.mcphersonartsalliance.com.
