The McPherson Opera House’s “Thursday Night at the Movies” screenings will take place on the first and third Thursdays of every month with occasional exceptions.
The Opera House is able to screen films via the service Specticast, which allows it to obtain and project films from a high quality digital master.
McPherson Opera House Director John Holecek said Specticast’s service was a great match for the Opera House as the company distributes its films digitally, and box office sales are split evenly between the Opera House and Specticast.
“I’m a film purist,” Holecek said, “and I’m also a film realist. Digital film has been the wave of the future for some time, and it’s proven to be ideal.”
The Opera House was able to have a huge library of accessible older and recent films because the service eliminates most film licensing fees, which Specticast pays.
This season already has seen screenings of the short film collection “Manhattan Shorts,” as well as a screening of the Hank Williams Sr. biography “The Last Ride.”
Next up is a Halloween screening of iconic Italian horror director Dario Argento’s latest film, “Dario Argento’s Dracula.”
Programming is still underway, but the Opera House has scheduled a Nov. 7 screening of “The Rolling Stones ‘Sweet Summer Sun: Hyde Park Live,’” and a Dec. 19 screening of “Christmas in Acidland,” a compilation of hilarious and intriguing clips from Christmas-related television programs and films from years past.
In the near future, the Opera House also will screen “The Tallgrass Film Festival Roadshow,” which presents a selection of short films from this week’s Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita.
Tickets are $5 for a viewer and, if the viewer brings a guest with him or her, the guest will get in free.
Holecek said he recommended checking the Opera House’s movie website www.mcphersonoperahouse.org/movies.htm frequently to see updates in the film programming schedule.
“I’d also like to mention,” Holecek said, “that we’ve got the best popcorn in the universe.”
