Coming off two straight wins over Bethel College and Central Christian College, the Bethany College volleyball team hosted KCAC foe Ottawa University on Wednesday, falling 3-0.
Ottawa took control of game one early, jumping out to an 11-6 lead over the Swedes. The Braves extended their lead to 16-11 before defeating Bethany 25-15.
After a 3-3 tie in game two, Bethany took an 11-8 lead. However, the Braves tied the game at 16 before extending their lead to 19-16. Ottawa held on to beat the Swedes 25-22.
In game three, the Swedes and Braves battled through a tie at four and a tie at seven before the Braves grabbed a 19-13 lead.
Ottawa went on to win game three 25-18, defeating the Swedes 3-0 in the match.
Sophomore Bryanna Cool led Bethany with 10 kills, followed by junior Alexa Gerber with seven, senior Maria Bujanda with five, and freshman Whitney Williams with four.
Gerber recorded 15 assists as freshman Eileen Vlamis added 11. Senior Sarah Phelps totaled 12 digs as sophomore Quethzally Chaparro tacked on six.
Senior Kaitlyn Davis threw down two assisted blocks as Bujanda, Gerber, Williams and Cool each had one. Cool had one solo block in the match while sophomore Ariel Buhr had two service aces.
"We knew going into the game that we were going to have to really play well to win," Bethany coach Nathalea Stephenson said. "We knew they would five line and I felt like we took advantage of that with Bryanna. They also put three blockers up on Maria, but she did a good job fighting through."
The Swedes are now 1-10 in the KCAC, and 5-18 overall. The squad returns to action on Oct. 23, as they travel to Sterling College for a 7 p.m. contest.
