  • Fresh off their first KCAC victory over Sterling College, the Bethany College men's soccer team headed to Southwestern College in Winfield on Wednesday, winning 4-2.
Southwestern got on the board 12 minutes into the game, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Swedes answered back minutes later with a goal by junior Angel Figueroa to tie the game at one. Figueroa was assisted by senior Lewis Collins and sophomore Luis Fernando.
The Moundbuilders scored with just under 20 minutes left in the first half to take a 2-1 halftime lead.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Bethany tied the contest as freshman Oladipo Williams scored, assisted by Figueroa and junior Lucas Procopio.
The Swedes added another goal five minutes later as Collins scored, assisted by junior Arman Hoque and Figueroa.
Figueroa punched in his second goal of the night at the 65-minute mark, assisted by Collins, propelling the Swedes to a 4-2 victory.
Bethany outshot Southwestern 27-9. Fernando totaled eight shots while Collins and Procopio added five each. Figueroa tacked on three shots. Senior goalkeeper Jackson McClure recorded four saves, allowing two goals.
"It was a tale of two halves," said Head Coach Kevin Megli. "We started off flat, scoring an own goal to start the game, only to respond two minutes later with a great equalizer. We still had no rhythm in the first half, forcing the ball when we did not have to.
“The second half we settled down and controlled the game, scoring three goals in nine minutes to take control of the game."
The Swedes are now 2-0-2 in the KCAC, and 6-2-3 overall. The squad hosts rival Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday.
Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
