The Zombie 5K Costume Run/Walk will begin with check-in and registration at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Crossfit Pathos, 511 West Marlin.
The event is intended as a fundraiser for the McPherson Housing Coalition’s plans to build moderate income housing units on its lot on the corner of Oak and Skancke streets.
McPherson Housing Coalition staff member Alana Murphy said the idea for a zombie walk came from her desire to do something unique.
“We were trying to figure out what we could do quickly and in the spirit of the holiday,” Murphy said.
While this will mark McPherson’s first zombie walk, zombie walks have been popular for a number of years, mostly popping up from time to time in cities.
Zombie walks typically involve a gathering of people in makeup and costume who walk a specified distance as a group, effectively recreating the sort of lumbering zombie mass a viewer might see in a film such as “Night of the Living Dead” or in the recent AMC network hit “The Walking Dead.”
While costumes and makeup are encouraged, Murphy said, as a family friendly event, would-be participants should refrain from overly gory, shocking or sexual attire.
“We don’t want to limit it to just zombies either,” Murphy said. “We’d love for kids to come out in their Halloween costumes, and other types of costumes are definitely welcome.”
After check in and registration, there will be a costume contest at 8 a.m. followed by the run/walk itself at 8:30 a.m.
The group will shamble their way in search of tasty brains and Tootsie Rolls down Marlin Street, make a turn at Lakeside Park, and will return to Crossfit Pathos via Euclid Street.
At 9:15 a.m.. the costume winners will be announced, with prizes of Halloween candy to be awarded in a number of categories.
Registering on arrival at the event is $25, while preregistration is $20. All proceeds will go to the McPherson Housing Coalition.
