The McPherson Housing Coalition is fundraising to build new moderate income housing units in McPherson.
A development of at least 16 housing units will be built on an empty lot the McPherson Housing Coalition bought on the corner of Oak and Skancke streets.
McPherson Housing Coalition founding member and executive director Chris Goodson said the coalition’s goal is to supply affordable homes for entry-level workers.
“The units will be 1,100 square feet,” Goodson said, “and will feature two bedrooms and two bathrooms each.”
The units are in the design phase, and Goodson said the aesthetic appeal of the design is a priority.
“We want the housing to look like it’s always been there,” Goodson said. “We want it to sit in naturally with the neighborhood.”
Goodson said she expected the construction budget to be between $650,000 and $750,000.
The McPherson Housing Coalition is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the affordable housing needs of McPherson County.
The organization will receive funding from donations with a mortgage to handle the amount donations didn’t cover when the housing units are ready for tenants.
Goodson said while the rental market in McPherson can be high, the plan is to keep the rent on this housing unit reasonable.
“It’s important to realize,” Goodson said, “that the more money we get from donations, the more reasonable the rent will be when it’s finished.”
Goodson said she hoped for a groundbreaking in late spring or early summer.
