The McPherson College and Bethany College cross country teams both traveled to Winfield Saturday for the annual NAIA Mid States Classic.
The Bulldog men's team finished 16th out of 25 teams while the Lady 'Dogs were 19th out of 29.
As a team, the Swede men didn’t place, as they were short-staffed due to injuries and some unidentified suspensions, though they did have a medalist. The Bethany women were 25th out of 29 teams.
For Mac College, freshman Michael Janzer posted a career-best 27:25.49 to lead the front pack of Bulldogs.
He was shortly followed by Chris Le at 27:32.10 and Kwan "Angus" Leung at 27:35.57. Dixon Cooney PR'd as he finished the race at 27:48.45 and Chris Newell closed out the scoring five for Mac with a time of 28:07.62.
For the Swede men, Jeremiah Gerardy finished 20th with a time of 25:44.85 to lead the Swedes. Senior Jordan Dahlke was the next closest with a time of 27:18.81, while William Nez, III, was the third top finisher for Bethany with a time of 28:13.99.
“As a whole, our men's team rallied and walked away with performances they can be proud of and build upon,” Aaron Yoder, interim Swede cross country coach, said. “All of our men had lifetime personal records. They each ran the fastest times of their life all on the same day. These days are very rare and very special. I think the women's squad set the tone for the day and inspired the men to seize the day.”
As always, Aspen Frey led the McPherson ladies, crossing in 75th, at 19:46.40. Miranda Clark set her third personal record of the season with her 20:32.91 finish.
Coming in third for Mac was Savana Cross who crossed at 21:09.18. Heidi Lyne and Damaje Markham rounded out the team with times of 21:15.68 and 21:17.88, respectively.
For Bethany, the top finisher was Elizabeth Benoit, who clocked in at 21:28.40. She was followed by Kylee Martinez (21:31.90) and Macey Dinkel (23:46.23).
“I couldn't be more proud of how our women battled today in a very competitive field,” Yoder said. “They held their own and walked away with their best performances of the season. We will be looking to better ourselves at conference in two weeks on the same course.”
Both schools will travel back down to Winfield for their next meet, coming on Nov. 9 for the KCAC Championships hosted by Southwestern College.
Bethany will compete with its full men’s contingent at the meet.
