  • No one really saw the results from Friday’s Class 4-1A State Soccer Championship semifinals coming. Not just one, but both number one seeds fell Friday, leaving McPherson and Baldwin on the outside looking in as Bishop Miege and Rose Hill vie for the state championship today. The Bullpups, who had come into the semifinals having outscored opponents 93-12, fell 1-0 to Bishop Miege in the early contest Friday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park. The Stags won off a free kick from Brandon Ramirez in the first half. Miege comes into the state tournament at the defending Class 5A champions, having dropped down to 4A in the latest round of classification reshuffling from the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Miege moves to 8-1 all-time in the semifinal round in boys’ soccer. The Rockets, hunting for their first-ever state championship in soccer, defeated Baldwin (17-2-1) 1-0. Rose Hill got on the scoreboard with 11 minutes left in the game off a Christian Helmke shot. This will be the fourth time in the last nine years Rose Hill will compete for the title. McPherson and Baldwin take the field first this afternoon at 12 p.m., while the championship match between the Rockets (15-3-2) and Miege (13-7) will start at 2 p.m.
