  • The McPherson Board of Education recognized the girls tennis team at its meeting Monday night for winning the State Championship. The players expressed their gratitude for the recognition.
The board also accepted various donations to district schools, programs and events from the Sellberg family, area banks and an anonymous donor.
Inge Esping, president of the McPherson Education Association, gave a presentation about education week, which will be Monday through Nov. 22.
Jill Beam, principal of Washington Elementary, gave a presentation about the school's implementation of the district C3 initiative.
The board heard a presentation about the SAFE Program, which aims to encourage high school students to use seatbelts while driving. The program is used across the state and encourages students to monitor each other for seatbelt use to decrease the number of injury and fatality accidents.
The program has proved successful in increasing the number of students who consistently wear seatbelts.
The board agreed to sell the old maintenance shop on Woodside for $67,500. The board also decided to delay purchasing a new vehicle for the district until 2014 because area dealers have said there is some uncertainty about what features new car models will have.
The board accepted a 3-year agreement with McPherson Museum to display district artwork in the museum. It also accepted new music standards for grades Pre-Kindergarten-5 and new reading curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year.
Sheldon Anderson, director of operations, reported on district construction. Projects and Lincoln and Roosevelt elementary schools are progressing, and the Park Warehouse is scheduled to be ready for games next week.
