Bethany College fought tooth-and-nail with Oklahoma Wesleyan University Friday night at Hahn Gymnasium, coming up just short 85-80. The two teams were tied at halftime 40-40, with the Swedes leading in field goal shooting, making 16-of-35. The Eagles, No. 13 in the NAIA Division II preseason coaches poll, shot 13-of-31. They did have more opportunities from the foul line, as they netted 9-of-13 shots from the charity stripe to Bethany's one basket in two tries. The second half saw the Eagles pull ahead, getting up by as much as 10 points, but the Swedes fought back to close the gap. Unfortunately, time was not on Bethany's side, as they fell 85-80. Kirby Hawkins led the Swede offense with 23 points on 9-for-19 shooting and 5-for-8 from three-point range. Idris Ibn Idris added 20 points, while Dwight Abad had 16. As a team, Bethany (2-2) shot 47.8 percent from the floor, making 33-of-69 shots. They were only 4-for-11 from the foul line. OWU won the rebounding battle 42-40, while the Swedes notched more turnovers 7-8. Bethany is off now until Thursday, when they host Southwestern Christian University.
