  • Through a partnership between the McPherson College Theatre department and USD 418, students are experiencing the musical theatre performance, “Into the Woods.”
The partnership dates to the 1996-97 school year. The project provides all elementary students with the opportunity to attend a live theater performance related to children’s literature.
This year’s performance is a musical combining the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade are attending the matinee this week.
A post-production follow-up allows McPherson College students to explain various aspects of production. Students have the opportunity to experience facets of theater that include the following: characterization, costuming, staging and performing.
Prior to the performance, teachers used a variety of ways to build background knowledge with these timeless classics of the fairy tale realm.  Library lessons, classroom read-alouds, and music and art helped students bring more meaning to their theatre experience.
Some teachers used the traditional versions to introduce the four fairy tales to students, while others used versions from other cultures to expand students' experience with similar story lines.
The Extending Literacy Through Theatre grant provides admission for the performance for each of the elementary schools.  The grant is funded by the McPherson Education Foundation. Each building's PTO is funding transportation costs.
