A look at a great weekend event happening here in McPherson County.

Three reasons to go

1. Take a journey back through time and celebrate traditions of Christmases past this weekend. The Quivira Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association is hosting a presentation called “Christmas on the Frontier” by Marla Matlin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the McPherson County Old Mill Museum, 120 Mill St. in Lindsborg. The event is free and open to the public. Holiday refreshments will be served.

2. Whether “home” was city, frontier or Western fort, the presentation takes a look at how people celebrated “Victorian Christmas Past.” Starting with the European origins of favorite Christmas traditions, the talk will cover the beginnings of holiday festivities in the homes of early Americans, as well as Christmas as it was celebrated during the Civil War.

3. Marla Matlin is a lifelong Kansan, tracing her Plains roots to her great-grandparents who homesteaded in southwest Kansas. Growing up near Dodge City, her love of history developed at an early age. She received a degree in education from Fort Hays State University, and she became a living historian and independent scholar to combine her love of both history and theater.
