  • The public is invited to attend the Grand Opening of the exhibits at the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation's new facility, located at 1111 E. Kansas Ave., starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Exhibits are being assembled for opening day. Carla Barber, museum director, said art from McPherson School District is ready to be hung, and fossils of the dire wolf and sabre-tooth tiger are awaiting their heads.
“We're kind of at that t-minus x-number of days, and it'll all come together at the last minute,” Barber said. “That's the nature of the beast.”
Other exhibits waiting for finishing touches include a display of antique cars and the fossil exhibit. Because not all displays will be completed by Saturday, those who purchase tickets for Saturday and the month of December will be able to return again in 2014 by presenting their ticket.
Exhibits that still will be under construction include the model train exhibit, which is expected to be completed in January, and the Family Adventure Center.
“Sometimes it looks like nothing's happening, but things are always going on,” Barber said.
The adventure center will be hands-on and interactive. Barber said the museum is planning to work with Naomi Ullom, who did the mural for the fossil display, to do another mural in the adventure center depicting aspects of area parks.
“We're a city of parks, and we haven't addressed that in the main exhibit hall,” Barber said. “There's a lot of things to be proud of. When you put all our history in one place, it's impactful.”
The museum will open at 10 a.m. Saturday with a brief introduction of the vision for the exhibits. At 10:30 a.m., admission tickets will be sold to enter the exhibit areas.
Admission is $7.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors (age 65 and over) and students age 4 and up, and free for children under 3.
Light refreshments will be available in the morning. Free screenings of movies of local interest will

be shown throughout the day, including “Oil and Gold,” the story of the Globe Refiners basketball team, and “McPherson County All Schools Day: Celebrating 100 Years.”
The museum will be open until 5 p.m. Saturday. It will then maintain regular hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The museum will be closed on Mondays and holidays.
Everyone who becomes a museum member on opening day will be eligible for a drawing for two free movie tickets. All current members will be entered into a drawing for a free one-year World Traveler membership, which can be kept as an upgrade, used to extend membership for an additional year, or given to someone else.
