  • McPherson High School wrestling coach Doug Kretzer has made no secret what his goal for the 2013-14 season is.
The Bullpups want the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League title.
“We not going to give anything up,” Kretzer said. “Just because we’re a young team, we’re still going travel where we need to go and then roll the mats out when we get home.”
This year’s Bullpup squad will be a young one, with 15 freshmen listed on the roster as of Monday night’s winter sports preview. That will mean that Kretzer will have to rely on his three seniors to provide leadership and guidance for all the new faces.
Those seniors include Jose Gloria, who will be competing at 138 pounds, and Todd Graber and Addie Lanning, both of whom will vie for the varsity slot at 145 pounds.
“We’ll need them,” Kretzer said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids that are going out for us at varsity this year. That senior leadership will be extremely important to the team in telling them who to look up to, how to practice, how to compete, how to manage your weight. All those things will be critical.”
MHS had one state medalist last season in former Bullpup Kaden Kretzer. While the goal, obviously, is to have more make it to that level this year, Doug Kretzer is focusing first on the team win of the AVCTL, which last year was dominated by El Dorado.
“They walked away with [league] pretty easily,” Kretzer said of last year’s Wildcat squad. “They were really senior heavy, however, so they will be in a rebuilding mode.”
Kretzer singled out Mulvane and Buhler as tough opponents on the schedule, but noted that there will be no soft opponents for anyone this year.
“They’re all going to kind of be in the same boat,” Kretzer said. “They’re all going to be tough. Any match could go either way.”
The Bullpups open up the 2013-14 season Thursday with a dual at Andale. The first home match will be Dec. 12 against Smoky Valley High School.
