  • Bill A. Alford Jr., 75, of Leavenworth passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at a Kansas City hospital.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father George Bertles officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 11, 2013, from 3 - 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart, with a Rosary at 7 p.m.
    Bill was born in Leavenworth Kan., on September 4, 1938 to William A. and Lorain (Boten) Alford Sr., the second of 11 children. He was a 1956 graduate of Immaculata High School. He began working at a very early age as a paperboy and carhop at Homer's Drive-in, as did his brothers. He worked at the A&P grocery store until its closure. He started selling cars at Feld Chevrolet where he found the perfect job for his cheerful and engaging personality. He was very successful in this occupation and was known as "Dollar Bill." He earned many General Motors vacation trips for high sales. Bill spent some time at Rusty Eck Ford before beginning a career at Fort Leavenworth. He retired March 3, 2001 as Dry Cleaning Supervisor at the USDB.
    On February 19, 1966, he married Sherry Coons in Lansing Kan., and later divorced. Two children were born of this union. He had great pride in both children and remained good friends with their mother.
    Bill was an avid sports fan who could be found in local ballparks umpiring or engaging with the players. He officiated football, basketball, and volleyball for nearly 50 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, hockey, competing in bird dog field trials, playing cards, and socializing in the community. He never met a stranger. He had season tickets to the Royals' games for many years and loved Jayhawk basketball. Above all, he was a devoted fan of the Fighting Irish football team and could usually be seen wearing Notre Dame apparel.
    Bill volunteered for the Chaplain Service at VAMC, Leavenworth, and served as a Eucharistic minister for veterans. He attended daily mass at all local Catholic Churches.
    Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Daniel Alford.
    Bill is survived by his two children, William A. "Trey" Alford III of Kansas City, Mo. and Sunni Alford of Shawnee Kan., brothers, John "Moe" (Susie) Alford of Lansing, Myron (Patty) Alford of Lansing, Edward (Mary) Alford of Topeka Kan., and Chris (Edie) Alford of Lansing, sisters, Regina (Jack) Ericson of Lansing, Rosemary (Francis) Peek of Tulsa, Okla., Carol (Charles) Simpson of Leavenworth, Patricia (Daniel) Lingenfelser of St George, Kan. and Margie (Lee) Jewell of Lansing, and many nieces and nephews. During the last years of Bill's life, he resided with his sister, Carol, and his children appreciate the love and tenderness she provided him. Also surviving is ex-wife, Sherry Alford of Lansing, and best friend, Jan Sifford of Leavenworth.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Leavenworth Catholic Schools or Sacred Heart Church.
