  • McPherson College picked up yet another product of the McPherson High School softball program, as senior Nicole Cheek signed a letter of intent Monday to play for the Bulldogs starting in 2014.
Cheek, who played four years with MHS and has been a member of the McPherson Lady Express softball program since 2007, is a second baseman on the softball field, though Mac College coach Mike McCormick also indicated they will work with Cheek on her pitching, as well.
Cheek will join Emily Davis and Mariah Wedel on the Bulldogs, both of whom are former McPherson High players as well.
“It’s always good to get a hometown kid,” McCormick said. “The two that I’ve picked up, Emily and Mariah, have made a big difference.”
Cheek had 75 at-bats this past season for the McPherson Lady Express U-16 team, which went 27-1, with that one loss coming in the USSSA World Series in Kansas City back in July. She had 25 hits and 13 RBIs for the Express, scoring 14 runs, self. She finished the summer hitting .33, with a slugging percentage of .400.
She is looking forward to being a Bulldog following graduation.
“It’s a small school and I liked that,” Cheek said. “The teachers seemed to care about us.”
Cheek, the daughter of Ben and Jodi Cheek, is, as yet, undecided on a major.
