  • McPherson High School senior Zane Richter made quite the splash during the Wichita Northwest Invitational Saturday, as he made up for missing the first meet of the year last week with a performance that will see him go to state in three events, including two relays and one individual effort.
Richter, Eric Gaeddert, Kyler Jost and Ryen Trost qualified as a relay team in both the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle. In the medley, the team turned in a time of 1 minute, 54.2 seconds, which MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher noted was over two seconds below the state qualifying time. The 200 freestyle saw the quartet qualify for state again by almost two seconds with a time of 1:39.67.
Individually, Richter qualified for state in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.8.
Gaeddert had the top medal finishes for the Pups, as he placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.61, a full seven seconds better than his previous personal best, which qualified him for state in that event. He also grabbed a bronze in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.27 seconds, just missing the state mark by .11 seconds.
Jost took fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.70 and had a seventh place finish in the 50 freestyle. Spencer Steinert took eighth in the 200 freestyle.
“This is always a good meet for our boys and this year was no different,” Fisher said. “We came away with 4 state qualifying times and an envelope of medals. The competition is always good at this meet and the pool facility at the Northwest Y in Wichita is fantastic. Team wise, we only ended up sixth  out of 10 schools, but the majority of those schools are Div I and Div II. The only team that beat us in our league was Rose Hill.”
MHS is back in the pool this afternoon, as they will travel to Barton County Community College for the Great Bend Invitational, which will also feature Hays, Hutchinson, Wichita Collegiate and Wichita Independent.
