  • Bethany College announced three more recent signees to the Swede softball program.
Erin Newport of Fontana, Kan., Rachel Cadden of Bromfield, Colo., and Taryn Hargash of Longmont, Colo., will all join Bethany in the 2014-2015 academic year.
Newport, a middle infielder, comes to Bethany from Prairie View High School in LaCygne, Kan. where she played softball, basketball and volleyball all four years.
Last high school softball season, Newport recorded a .541 batting average with a .592 on base percentage and .770 slugging percentage.
In 61 at bats, she amassed 22 singles, eight doubles, three triples, 23 runs, and 26 runs batted in.
"We are excited to add Erin Newport to our program," Swede coach Janice Esses said. "She is the type of person that is not afraid of hard work and wants to get better every day. Erin's speed makes her a threat on the bases. We look forward to working with her and watching her develop as a person and player."
Newport is the daughter of Shelly and Chris Newport. She has a 3.4 high school grade point average, and plans to major in elementary and special education.
Cadden, a pitcher and infielder, comes to Bethany from Legacy High School in Broomfield, Colo., where she played softball all four years and golf for one year.
Cadden was also a member of the Debate team and a three-year participant in DECA, attending the state competition for two years.
In the 2013 high school softball season, Cadden posted a .304 batting average and two runs batted in.
"Rachel is a versatile player with experience in the circle, on the infield and in the outfield,” Esses said. “It is great to have a player you can put anywhere on the field. We look to have her work at several positions until we can determine where her strengths are needed to help the team. We look forward to working with her next fall and watching her develop academically and athletically."
Cadden is the daughter of Anne and Stephen Cadden.
She has a 2.5 high school grade point average, and plans to major in athletic training.
Hargash, an outfielder, comes to Bethany from Longmont High School where she played varsity softball all four years. She earned four varsity letters in softball, and received Academic All-State honors her junior and senior year.
Hargash also played soccer as a freshman in high school, playing both junior varsity and varsity.
During her four-year high school softball career, Hargash recorded a .301 batting average, a .404 on-base percentage, 19 runs batted in and 12 of 14 steal attempts.
"Hargash exemplifies our program philosophy of working hard on and off the field,” Esses said. “As an outfielder, Taryn reads the ball off the bat well, allowing her to get a good jump on the ball. This also allows her to cover a lot of ground in the outfield. She has a strong arm with pinpoint accuracy. Through our program, Taryn will develop as a student-athlete. We look forward to working with Taryn next fall. She will be a great addition to Bethany College and our softball program."
