Sometimes we fail to see them — those people who are living on the financial edge. McPherson likes to portray itself as an affluent community, but we, as all communities, have its share of families who work pay check to pay check. We see these people every day. They work in customer service, in restaurants at discount stores and even in some industries in our city.
Their jobs pay minimum wage or not much more, and they have scant or no benefits.
One minor crisis such as an illness occurs and pushes the family over the edge.
The McPherson County Community Foundation’s Resource Council steps in when a family has one of these crises. The council helps those families who would normally fall through the cracks. The money, which is available to McPherson County residents year round as fund are available, helps with health care-related expenses. All the funds stay within McPherson County.
The fund can help pay for prescriptions or gas to attend medical appointments. The council also cooperates with a variety of other community organizations to assist families who are in financial need during the holiday season. The council assists about 200 to 300 individuals per year.
The council’s major fundraiser is the Christmas Fund. The McPherson Sentinel and its ad partners are sponsoring a drive to raise money for the fund through Dec. 31. The McPherson County Community Foundation will take the donations.
A anonymous donor has come forward and said he or she will donate a dollar-for-dollar match to the community’s contributions up to $5,000. This means if you donate $100, $200 will go to the fund.
This is a wonderful opportunity to double your donations for an important service in the community.
The Sentinel hopes the community can raise $5,000, which with the match will mean a donation of $10,000 to the Christmas Fund to benefit the Resource Council.
Donations are tax deductible.
Checks can be made payable to the McPherson County Community Foundation. Write Christmas Fund in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to 206 S. Main St., McPherson, KS 67460.
