  • As of Jan. 1, Brett Whitenack became the acting director of the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation.
Carla Barber, former museum director, left the director position as of Dec. 31.
Mike Rausch, museum board president, would reveal few details surrounding Barber’s departure.
Barber said she could not comment on her departure from the museum at this time.
Rausch said the board had to protect Barber’s rights to confidentiality. He said more information about the leadership change may be released at a later date.
“I am not in a position to say one way or the other,” he said. “There are a lot of rumors out there and three-fourths of them are not even in the ballpark.”
The McPherson Museum recently opened a new $4 million, 28,000-square-foot facility at 1111 E. Kansas Ave.
The facility celebrated a grand opening Nov. 30, but some of the exhibits have yet to be finished.
The board’s plan is to finish the exhibits in the museum’s main exhibit hall.
“There probably is a lot of stuff people don’t realize we have,” Rausch said. “We are going to size things up, finish cabinetry and exhibits and things of that nature and move forward with a wonderful museum. We want to make it a showplace.”
The board has not started a search for a new director. The museum is still fundraising for the new facility. Rausch said the board will evaluate if the organization needs someone to focus on administration or someone who can focus more time on fundraising.
Whitenack, who was previously the museum’s curator, will play a dual role at the museum as acting director and curator until a replacement is named. He did not return calls Friday afternoon.
