  • The McPherson High bowling team overcame some adverse lane conditions Tuesday to come away with a pair of varsity wins at Play-Mor Lanes in Newton
The Bullpups boys and girls defeated both Newton and Cheney Tuesday in what MHS coach Herb Halinski termed a wake-up call for the bowlers.
“It was a fairly slick lane condition and most of them haven't seen that before,” Halinski said. “The outside part of the lane was really slick and if you got the ball out there it didn't want to hook back. The more experienced players were able to get more to the inside part of the lane where the ball would hook.”
For the boys, MHS won the varsity triangular with a team score of 2,304. Newton recorded a 2,137, while Cheney had a 1,851.
Joel Morey had the best series for the boys with a 617, while the best individual game was recorded by Jeff Reed with a 237.
The junior varsity lost to Newton 1,7730-1,512. Cheney did not field a JV squad.
Jacob Krehbiel had the high series with a 410.
The Lady Pups handily won their triangular with a team score of 2,078. Newton was closest with a 1,690, while Cheney had a team score of 1,613.
Crystal Nutter had the top series and game, recording an overall 571 with a individual game of 237 in game two.
The JV won with a total of 1,670. Newton had a 1,166 and Cheney a 1,080.
Alexis Kieffer had the top series with a 452 and recorded a team best game of 166.
The Pups are at home for the first time Jan. 24, as they will host a triangular against Mulvane and Cheney at Starlite Lanes.
