  • There was a point about halfway through the first quarter of the McPherson High girls’ road game against El Dorado where the Wildcats scored six straight points and the Bullpups found themselves down to a winless Wildcat team. The deficit was only three points, but it served as a wake-up call for MHS, who responded by getting angry. Really angry. The Lady Bullpups erupted on a 31-3 run over eight minutes of game time between the first and second quarters on their way to a 57-27 dismantling of El Dorado. “One of the best things that could have happened was that we did fall behind 6-3,” MHS coach Chris Strathman, whose team improves to 5-4 overall and 5-0 in league play, said. “Really, we kind of started out slow down here last year, too. The final score wasn’t a whole lot different from what it was tonight.” It was a night that allowed multiple players to shine for the Lady Bullpups. Abby Pedersen was sharp again from the field, knocking down a trio of three-point buckets to finish with 14 points. Junior Cassidy Wedel had an offensive flurry of eight points over the course of two minutes midway through the second quarter and played outstanding defense for the Pups all night. “Cassidy actually missed practice yesterday with an illness,” Strathman said. “Told her at halftime she should be sick more often and miss practice. But she came out and attacked the basket and just looked really comfortable tonight out on the floor.” Wedel finished with the eight points, while Janae Barnes added nine to the winning effort. El Dorado was led by Destiney Smith, who had seven points. In the JV game, the Bullpups decimated El Dorado 60-15, while the freshmen girls won 37-18. Individual scoring was not available at press time. Up next for McPherson is one last tune-up for the Mid America Classic, as the Bullpups will host Circle on Tuesday. Strathman feels the Thunderbirds could be a potential problem for MHS at the Roundhouse. “What they like to do is just change defenses a lot,” Strathman said. “They do not let you get comfortable. And they do a really good job.” Tip off Tuesday night will be at 7:30 p.m.
