Milner Milling and Pendleton Flour Mills, Chattanooga, Tenn., announced an agreement to purchase Cereal Food Processors, headquartered in Mission Woods, Kan., creating the third largest flour milling company in the United States.
The transaction details were not disclosed at this time. The name of the newly created company will be announced at a later date.
Cereal Foods purchased WR Mill in McPherson in 2000, and it remains a going concern in McPherson. WR Mill was built near the railroad tracks on the edge of town in 1906, at 416 N. Main St. The city grew around the Mill, making it part of the bustling McPherson downtown.
Brent Wall, vice president and general manager, is a member of the Wall family who originally began the mill.
Wall anticipates no changes to the staffing or production on the local level.
“The business is stable, and the customer base is stable,” he said. “There’ll be no changes as far as I know at this time. I know the people who are buying the business, and they are great people.”
Wall is retiring on June 1, but Eric (Ric) Wall, director of sales, will remain, so there will still be a family member at the mill.
Brent Wall has worked at the mill since he was a boy, with his first official position being production coordinator in 1969.
“It’s hard to sum up a career in a few short sentences,” Wall said. “The usual ‘It’s been a great ride’ seems trite. But I have thoroughly enjoyed my work. It’s a great industry to be a part of, from the field to the board room. I’d certainly encourage any young person just starting out to consider it as a career.”
Wall said he’ll be a trailblazer in his family: the first to actually retire.
“It’s unknown territory,” he said.

Milner Milling is a privately owned flour milling company headquartered in Chattanooga, Tenn. with mill locations in Barnesville, Ga., and Rome, Ga., and Birmingham, Ala. Pendleton Flour Mills was formed by joining two prominent milling companies in the Pacific Northwest. Also headquartered in Chattanooga, Pendleton has mill locations in Pendleton, Ore., Blackfoot, Idaho and Honolulu, Hawaii. Combined, Milner Milling/Pendleton Flour Mills is the seventh largest flour miller in the U.S. and supplies bulk and bag flour to a diverse range of food manufacturers and food service customers.
Combining two of the nation’s top independent flour milling companies, the new company will serve customers nationally in the baking and food industries. The formation of the newly combined companies is expected to be completed this spring, following regulatory clearances.
