  • During its meeting Monday, the McPherson County Commission agreed to allow a new motorcycle race as a part of the annual Thunder on the Smoky motorcycle rally in Marquette.
The request was for a temporary-use permit that would allow the race. The commission decided to allow the petitioner to submit paperwork to the planning and zoning administrator rather than go through the normal temporary-use process.
A representative from Marquette said the race is intended to raise money for the Kansas Motorcycle Museum. He said a similar event in 2007 raised $2,000 for the museum.
The representative said there will probably not be a race this year because planning was started late. This year’s Thunder on the Smoky rally will be May 17.
    MASWU
The commission also heard a report from John Hawk, general manager of McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility. Hawk said cold weather has delayed construction at the new landfill. He also said McPherson residents should receive recycling bins in late April or early May.
Recyclable materials will not need to be sorted and will be picked up every other week on the same day trash is collected.
The commission approved MASWU’s updated five-year solid waste plan. Hawk said there were only a few updates to the plan.
    NCRA
The commission tabled a request from NCRA to approve a subdivision on a plot of land near the airport because it will hear more about a requested special-use permit on the plot in its next meeting.
The permit would allow the plot to be used as a storage space. Nearby residents spoke against the proposal in a hearing in March, and the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended against approving the permit.
    In other business, the commission:
    • Approved an Adopt a Highway application from the Roxbury Lions Club to clean one-mile stretches of roads outside of Roxbury.
    • Approved bids for road maintenance materials and road markers
