  • Treasure Chest Gun Shop is considering the construction of a new indoor gun range at its property at 1100 W. Kansas Ave. in McPherson.
Steven and Melissa Sechler, Treasure Chest owners, have filed paperwork with the city of McPherson for a special-use permit for the gun range.
Steven Sechler said the gun range would be the only public indoor range in the region. The other nearest public indoor ranges are in Junction City and Wichita.
The business plans to construct a 50- by 125-foot building north of its current gun shop for a 25-yard gun range.
Sechler said gun enthusiasts as far away as Wichita have expressed interest in using the proposed range.
“The ranges are so busy in Wichita, they can’t get in,” he said.
The store has collected a petition with 300 to 400 names in support of the gun range, Sechler said.
The shop already teaches concealed carry classes, but must use an outdoor range for certification. The indoor range would allow the shop to certify at the indoor range and widen its class offerings. The shop intends to offer women’s classes, classes for youth and hunter safety courses.
Sechler said he thought the gun range will be a draw for the community and bring new tax dollars to the city.
“We will be having people stopping for gas and food or maybe looking for furniture,” he said.
Tom Stinemetze, city zoning administrator, said he did not see any obvious roadblocks to the project at this time.
However, issues such as safety and noise will have to be considered during public hearings.
The property in question is not adjacent to any residential neighborhoods. The nearest residential area is a small mobile home park at 1050 W. Kansas Ave. The lot is bordered on the north by McPherson Concrete.
Sechler said all safety protocols will be followed in the construction and operation of the gun range.
“The last thing I want is for anyone to get hurt,” he said. “Someone is more apt to get hurt out in the country. At a range, we have to have a range master out there all of the time.”
The McPherson City Planning Commission will consider the special-use permit for the project at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at the McPherson Municipal Center, 400 E. Kansas Ave.
The timeline for opening the range depends in part on approval of the project by the city.
