  • McPherson High junior Bri Cooks wasted no time in putting the rest of the state on notice Friday, as she broke her own school record in the shot put in the Bullpups’ first track and field meet of the year.
Cooks took first at the Junction City Invitational in the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 9 1/2 inches. That broke her record toss from 2013, which was 39 feet, 11 1/4 inches.
Overall, the Bullpup girls took third at Junction City, while the boys came in seventh.
“It was some great competition from the likes of Salina South, Shawnee Heights, Junction City,” MHS coach Jace Pavolich said. “Some of the best 5 and 6A schools around. Our kids did a great job competing. I really like where we are at this point in the season.”
The only other gold medal performance for the Pups came from Christina Wankum, as the sophomore out-paced the field in the 3,200 meter dash with a time of 12 minutes, 27.81 seconds. She also took second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:51.87.
Other second place finishes came from Alisa Becker in the javelin, Ivanna Moyer in the discus, Megan Pedersen in the high jump, Chris Stoppel in the 100-meter dash and the boys’ 4x100 relay of Collin Harvey, Spenser Wine, Chris Stoppel and Dylan Shook.
The Pups have a short turnaround, as they will travel to Newton for an invitational on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., with a second meet Friday at Marion.
