  • The tenure of Steve Williams as McPherson High School baseball coach was as tumultuous as it was brief, as the USD 418 Board of Education voted Monday to accept Williams’ resignation.
The move came after several complaints were received about his treatment of the student-athletes, though district officials declined to comment as to the specifics of the nature of said treatment.
In a statement, the Board said, "The McPherson Board of Education Today accepted the resignation of head baseball coach, Steve Williams, effective immediately.
"Mr. Williams's philosophy on the treatment of student-athletes was not consistent with USD 418's policies and practices.
USD 418 wishes Coach Williams all the best in the future."
Also as part of Monday's special meeting, the board voted to name long time assistant coach Grant Myers as the interim head coach for the duration of the season.
Williams was in his first season as coach of the Bullpups and had only coached in one doubleheader for MHS before his suspension March 31 following what the district then termed as "a situation."
Williams was a long time coach at Hutchinson High School, but left the Salt Hawks in 2010. He had served as an assistant coach with the McPherson College baseball program prior to joining McPherson High School.
