  • Smoky Valley’s Claire Denk and McPherson’s Katie Wurm added to their medal count Tuesday in the Winfield Invitational, as the duo continues to find success in the pool this season.
Denk had a gold in the 100 butterfly, clocking in with a time of 1:09.12. She then added a silver in the 50 freeestyle by viture of a 27.13 second performance.
Wurm, meanwhile, had another big day, as she swam the 100 freestyle in 1:09.47, which earned her a silver medal. She also took fifth in the 200 individual medley, an impressive showing considering it was the first time she had participated in the race.
The duo teamed up with Amanda Starkel and Ellen Yowell to also bring home a bronze in the 200 medley relay, finishing in a time of 2:13.44.
“Best times were few and far between, but that is to be expected at this point in their season,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “The girls are in the middle of their hardest training and swam over 20,000 yards last week. The biggest time drop was swam by Amanda Starkel who cut over 8 seconds in her 100 free.”
Another bright spot for the Smoky Valley swimmers was the return of Shea Cook, who had been nursing a knee injury. She picked up a pair of medals in her first meet back, winning fourth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 free.
The Pup/Viking squad will be in Salina today, the closest they have to a home meet,’ which will mark a departure for the relays, as Fisher will split the two schools into teams.
“The only way that we can swim relays at State is if the qualifying time is made when only swimmers from the same school are on it,” Fisher said. “For McPherson, I am expecting their 200 medley relay to hit the state mark  with freshmen Starkel and Corrigan, sophomore Wurm, and junior Ellen Yowell. The best part about that relay is that it can only get stronger in the next few years because they are all under classmen. In the  200 Free relay the pressure will be on the same four girls to make the state time.”
Smoky Valley’s 200 freestyle relay team will be comprised of Denk, Cook, freshman Haylee Herman and sophomore Logan Stambough.
