  • Moundridge ran into a buzzsaw in the form off Ell-Saline Tuesday, as the Wildcats were trumped 10-2 and 14-1 at Moundridge High School.
Despite the scores, however, Wildcat coach Clark Wedel sees improvement in his team.
“We didn't show it tonight, but we are getting better,” Wedel said. “We must play with confidence and be tough minded when things go wrong.”
Emily Knight took the loss in game one, though she did hold the Cardinals to only four runs through the fifth innning. Ell-Saline scored six in the sixth to ice the game.
Elizabeth Ratzlaff drove in both Moundridge runs in the bottom of the frame off a single to center field. Ratzlaff had the only multiple hit game for the Wildcats, going 2-for-3 with the two RBIs.
Knight gave up 10 runs, only three earned, on 11 hits. She struck out seven and walked five.
“Knight pitched pretty well in the first game we just weren't sound enough defensively to slow their offense,” Wedel said. “Our multiple errors led to several unearned runs. We also only were able to get six hits off of their pitcher. She is one of the stronger pitchers that we will see this year. We will have to cut down our mistakes to beat a team like Ell-Saline.”
Game two saw Ell-Saline out-hit Moundridge 14-5, though the Cardinals only led 4-1 going into the fourth, when they rattled off five runs. Ell-Saline added five more in the sixth to get the run-rule.
Zaelynn Foth drove in the only run for Moundridge in the bottom of the second on an 0-0 pitch with two outs.
Ratzlaff went six innings for Moundridge and took the loss, giving up 14 runs on 14 hits, with seven runs earned. She had three strike outs and one walk.
“They were impressive at the plate,” Wedel said. “They showed a solid small ball game and then also demonstrated excellent power.  We just couldn't slow down their bats.”
The Wildcats fall to 4-4 on the year and are off now until Tuesday, when they travel to Bennington.
Chelsey Knight went 2-for-3 to lead Moundridge, who didn’t get an extra base hit in the game.
