  • No other team came close to the McPherson High girls junior varsity track and field team Thursday at the MHS JV Invitational at McPherson Stadium.
They were so dominating, in fact, that the next closest team was 120 points behind MHS.
“It was a fantastic effort across the board,” McPherson coach Jace Pavlovich said. “We had some young kids that filled in today and did a great job. We have a bright future.”
The MHS girls finished with 178 team points, with Valley Center in second with 58. Newton (49), Salina Central (48) and Goddard (47) rounded out the top five of the 10 team field.
The MHS boys also had a great showing Thursday, as they finished with 122 points to take first place, as well. Hays was second with 112 points, followed by Newton (85), Salina South (66.5) and Goddard (58).
The Lady Pups record 10 first place finishes during the course of the afternoon, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-meter dash thanks to Laynie Moore, Kamryn Collins and Rilynn Anderson, respectively.
MHS took the top four spots in the 200 dash, led by Collins, Anderson, Amy Suenram and Grace Hucksoll.
Freshman Morgan Howard had three gold medals on the day, with two coming during individual events and the third in 4x100 relay with Collins, Anderson and Moore. Howard took first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.48 seconds and in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
The Bullpup boys picked up four gold medals. Taylor Kynaston took first in the 100 dash with a time of 11.91. Kyle Smith took first in the 400 (54.97), while Kalib Martin finished in the top spot in the 800 run (2:18.51).
The final gold went to the 4x100 relay of Kynaston, Jason Anderson, Tucker Chapman and Drake Janzen. The quartet took first in a time of 47.27.
Pavlovich indicated that, due to last week’s varsity track meet being dkipped due to a scheduling conflict, he allowed some of the freshmen and sophomore varsity competitors to participate in the JV meet in an effort to get them more time on the track.
The MHS varsity meet will be held at McPherson Stadium May 1.
