  • McPherson High School finished sixth in a loaded field during Saturday’s Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions.
    It was a good measuring stick for the Bullpups as the ramp up for the state meet, as MHS was faced off with the top team in Class 4A, (Topeka Hayden) and the top team in Class 3-1A (Collegiate).
    McPherson is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A as of the latest Kansas Tennis Coaches Association rankings released Monday.
    The Bullpups had their highest finish from twin seniors Peter and Ryan Horton, who finished fourth in the doubles division after a 3-2 record.
    The Hortons lost in the third place game to Collin Martin and Isaac Penner of Hesston, who is ranked No. 3 in Class 3-1A as of Monday.
    The duo of Dylan Stos and Luke Williams went 2-3 for 12th place. Gallagher Martin went 4-1 for 17th in singles action. Nick Carlson slid up into the varsity rotation, filling in for Kento Aizawa and finishing 20th with a 2-3 record.
    Collegiate and Hayden battled it out for the top spot of the tournament, as Collegiate finished with 106 points and Hayden 105.
    Hesston was third with 98, while Newton was fourth with 90.
    Independence just edged McPherson out of fifth place, finishing with 82 points to MHS 81.
