  • The McPherson High School track and field teams made the most of their home meet Thursday, as the girls took first place and the boys fourth in a tough field.
The highlight of the girls’ events was the 100-meter dash, which saw the Bullpups sweep the medals, as Laynie Moore, Kamryn Collins and Rilynn Anderson all finished first, second and third, respectively.
Moore finished in a time of 13.09 seconds, while Collins clocked in at 13.29 and Anderson 13.41.
The Lady Pups also went 1-2 in the long jump, as Amy Suenram took first with a jump of 15 feet, 11 inches, beating out Moore in a tie-breaker, as Moore also lept 15-11.
MHS finished first with 132 points, though Valley Center was hot on the Bullpups’ heels, as they came in at 129. Goddard-Eisenhower was third with 96, followed by Pratt (90) and Wichita North (82).
Chris Stoppel took first in the 100 for the boys team, clocking in with a time of 11.29. Collin Harvey was third with a 11.40 time, though he did take first in the 200 with a time of 23.11.
The Pups were fourth with 104 points behind Great Bend (160), Wichita North (115) and Valley Center (111). Pratt was fifth with 85 points.
It was an impressive finish for a hobbled Bullpup squad.
“We’ve had a few more injuries this meet that we’ve had to put some subs in for,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “But they’re doing a good job. This is a smaller meet at seven teams, but the teams we’ve got are good. So, we’re happy with where we’re at.”
Thursday was supposed to mark the return to competition for Keshawn Sewell, a favorite to compete for a state championship in the triple jump. Sewell had suffered a broken leg during the Christmas break in basketball season and attempted one run through the triple jump, but pulled himself out of the competition after feeling something odd in his leg during the first phase of the triple jump.
“It might have been a little bit early [for Sewell to return],” Pavlovich said. “He’s cleared to go and he really wanted to do it at home. He pulled up in time, though. He should be OK.”
The Pups have an invitational at Wamego May 9 before heading to the AVCTL meet on May 16.
