  • Treg Fawl has taken the first step towards his fourth-straight McPherson City Golf Tournament championship, though he by no means has a comfortable lead heading into today’s second round.
It was a tough day all around at the McPherson Country Club, as golfers had to contend with gusty south winds and fast greens that had the leaders after day one hovering right around 80 after the first day.
Fawl was the only player in the field who managed to shoot under 80, as he came in with a 77. Fawl holds a three-shot advantage over MHS sophomore Jacob Lackey, former two-time McPherson City champion Nick Ikenberry and Luke Aichele.
It should be noted that, should Lackey hold on to his position over the next two days, Kansas State High School Activities Association rules prevent him from being in the running for the winner’s purse.
Aichele’s performance is impressive, as he hasn’t played much this year.
Kelly Sorenson, Craig Corrigan, Kurt Kinnamon and Ed Bate are all gnarled up at fifth with an 81.
In the team division, Fawl, along with his father Tony, have a slim lead over Jeff Warren and Rick Davison. The Fawls finished with a 72, while Warren and Davison are right on their heels with a 73.
Kinnamon and Corrigan aren’t far off the mark with a 74.
Weather conditions will be much the same for today’s round, which teed off at Rolling Acres Golf Course at 9 a.m. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s, with winds out of the south at 5-15 MPH, with gusts around 30.
The Fawls and Warren and Davison are in the 1:30 p.m. flight at Rolling Acres. Kinnamon and Corrigan were in the 9 a.m. flight.
The final round will tee off from Turkey Creek Golf Course Sunday at 1 p.m., with all golfers starting at No. 1, with the leaders going last.
