  • Two McPherson coaches were recognized as the top in the state in their respective divisions Saturday by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.
McPherson High boys coach Kurt Kinnamon and McPherson Middle School eighth grade boys coach Tyler Brown were named as Coaches of the Year for Class 4A Division I and the Junior High Boys divisions, respectfully.
Additionally, Kinnamon was honored for hitting the 400 win plateau this past season, during which he led the team to a 24-1 record and won his fifth state championship with the Bullpups.
It was the 12th state title for the McPherson boys program in it’s storied history.
Brown, meanwhile, was honored following an undefeated season that saw his team finish with a 12-0 mark.
“It helps to have a group of talent like we had,” Brown said. “Very deep, wasn’t just one person. We definitely had our all-stars, but we were deep from our top guy to, probably, our guy at the end of the bench. It makes it easy to compete when you’ve got that kind of talent.”
In his last six years with MMS, Brown has put together a 68-23 record and his teams have won four of the eight tournaments they have competed in.
It was the perfect cap for the 2013-2014 school year for Brown, who also had a state championship with the MHS girls tennis team in October and a second place team finish for the boys in May, with Ryan and Peter Horton winning the doubles state title.
