  • The McPherson Lady Express 18Us may have out-scored their opponents 32-10 over this past weekend’s Xtreme Showdown in Derby, but they finished third Sunday after giving up seven of those runs to one team.
The Express started out hot Saturday, as they didn’t allow a single run in their three games in pool play, which included a 19-0 no-hitter by Madison Hoffman against the Heat. Not only that, but Hoffman was perfect in the circle, not allowing even a walk in the blowout win.
She struck out four in the three inning game.
McPherson poured on 14 hits on the Heat, which included a grand slam from Jasmine Wann in the top of the second inning that capped an 11-run inning.
Also Saturday, the Express (11-3) defeated Velocity Softball 4-0 and the GC Comets 1-0.
Allison Weber had the win against Velocity, going seven innings and giving up only two hits. She struck out five.
Weber and Hannah Marshall both went 2-for-3 in the game, with Marshall and Nicole Cheek both picking up doubles.
Jasmine Wann hit the only extra-base hit in the game against the Comets in the form of an RBI double that scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Julie Sinclair went four innings and picked up the win, giving up four hits but no walks. She struck out six.
The Express opened up bracket play on Sunday with a 7-2 win over the Clash in the second round, as they had received a bye in the first.
Sinclair had the win, going three innings and giving up both runs, only one of which was earned. She had three hits but no walks credited against her. She struck out four.
Hoffman finished out the game in the final two innings, giving up three hits and one walk. She struck out two.
Wann led the offense by getting a single, a double and a triple in a 3-for-3 showing at the plate. She also had three RBIs.
Marissa Axelson had a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs.
In the semifinals, McPherson ran into the Comets once more, but Weber was rocked for 11 hits in the 7-2 loss. Only one run was earned. She walked two and struck out two.
Weber did go 2-for-2 at the plate with a double. Hoffman had two RBIs.
The Comets fell in the championship game to Blue Aces Fastpitch.
McPherson shared a portion of third place with G2 Heat 18 out of Newton.
