  • For two days, McPherson will play host to one of the best showcases for youth basketball in the state, as the Mid America Youth Basketball tournament returns Saturday and Sunday.
A total of 18 teams in five age groups will converge on the McPherson College Sport Center, with teams from as far away as Oklahoma in the field.
“MAYB allows players of all abilities to play,” Tim Swartzendruber, McPherson tournament organizer and McPherson College men’s coach, said of the appeal of MAYB. “They are the least expensive option for kids who want to play in this type of atmosphere. Players get five games and get to play in a competitive, organized environment.”
Pool play will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. in both the main and auxiliary gyms at the Sport Center, 400 N. Eshelman. Age groups for the boys will be 5-6, 9-10 and 11-12. The girls will play in two divisions, 7-8 and 11-12.
The championship brackets for most age groups will be played on Sunday, though the 11-12 boys will play all of their games out on Saturday, as there are only three teams in the field.
Cost per day for the tournament is $4 for a student and $5 for an adult.  For a weekend pass, it is $6 for students and $8 for adults.
The number of teams in the tournament is down from recent years, though Swartzendruber feels that is due to the fact that it will be played out this year over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The economic impact to McPherson for hosting the tournament shouldn’t be lessened any, either.
“Although the number of teams is down, the event is a great economic boost for the community,” Swartzendruber said. “We have two teams traveling from Oklahoma this year and, in years past, we have always had a number of teams from considerable distance who spend the night in our local motels and hotels.”
