  • After almost 13 years of practicing in her hometown, Dr. Shelley Overholt is leaving Family Practice Associates of McPherson for Cuyuna Family Medical Center in Crosby, Minnesota. Her last day will be July, 11 at which point Dr. Alicia Chennell will take over her duties at Family Practice.
Many factors went into making this decision, Overholt said.
“My husband and I had planned on moving there around our retirement, but we decided to take a chance and move there while we are young enough to enjoy it,” she said.
Since Overholt has been in McPherson, a rather large percentage of babies born in the area have done so with her as the attending physician. In her tenure at Family Practice, she has delivered almost 900 babies.
“For a small town like McPherson, that is astronomical,” said Lauri Loder, a registered nurse who has worked for Overholt since the beginning in 2001.
Moving to Minnesota will not only be a geographical change for Overholt, but a career change as well. She will be working for a group of family practice physicians who are affiliated with one hospital. With a smaller case load, Overholt hopes to be able spend more time with her family.
“The changes in my practice are huge, I will no longer deliver babies,” Overholt said. “I still love delivering babies, but I love my own babies more.”
However, the infants of McPherson will not be left without support. Chennell will take over the delivering duties Overholt is leaving behind. A McPherson native, Chennell finished her residency in June at Lincoln Family Medicine Program in Nebraska. She spent some of her training as a medical student at Family Practice under Dr. Greg Thomas as well as Overholt. She will use the same office phone number and nurses as Overholt.
This will hopefully help patients feel at ease with the transition, Loder said.
As she moves onto the next stage in her life. Overholt will be missed by colleagues and patients as much as she will miss them.
“Dr. Overholt has been a very valuable asset to the community’s health care, in particular women’s health care in McPherson,” said Dr. Dave Buller. “She will be greatly missed by the community as well as by her associates here at Family Practice Associates.”
Overholt said, “I am very excited about this next chapter in my family’s story. It will take a lot of time to build relationships similar to what I have now with my patients in McPherson and my physician colleagues in the area.”
