  • There may have only been five age divisions, but this weekend’s McPherson MAYB tournament provided a lot of fireworks for basketball fans.
The tournament, condensed to two days, because of the July Fourth holiday, featured both McPherson High basketball teams, split up into two divisions, with the MHS 11-12 boys taking first in the tournament, having gone 3-0 in their bracket to win the division.
That included two wins over the McPherson College Bulldog freshmen, as the Bullpups downed Tim Swartzendruber’s newcomers 66-59 in the finals.
Mid-Kansas took third in the standings.
In the girls’ 11-12 division, the Dream Team, an area all-star team, took first place over the Mac Lady Pups.
McPherson went 2-2 in the division, winning twice over third-place finisher Oklahoma Lightning and dropping both games to the Dream Team.
McPherson’s 9-10 boys took first in that division, with St. John and Ell-Saline going 2-3 in the final standings.
In the 7-8 grade girls division, the Dream Team, again, came out on top, followed by Eclipse Southwest and the Oklahoma Lightning.
The 5-6 boys’ bracket was won by NLHA out of Wichita, followed by the Salina Dawgz and the Reno Force.
There weren’t as many teams this year, which tournament organizers attributed to the long, holiday weekend.
“I thought we had some good basketball,” Roger Trimmel, tournament co-organizer, said. “We had some good support from area teams.”
