  • The McPherson Board of Education appointed Rhonda Wince to the board to replace a seat vacated by Nancy Young.
Of those who ran but were not elected, Wince was the highest vote-getter in the last school board election. She works at Wince Family Dental Associates and volunteers with the Curriculum Coordinating Council and Eisenhower Elementary School parent-teacher organization.
Wince will be placed on the board at the board’s July 28 meeting and remain on the board until the next board election.
The board also voted to appoint Brad Berg as board president and Chris Wiens as vice president for the 2014-2015 school year.
The board approved rebuilding playgrounds at district elementary schools with artificial turf at a cost of $184,150. This will be paid through bond issue funds and capital outlay funds. It also approved a bid for $19,393 for roof repairs at the Park Warehouse.
The board approved increasing wages for classified employees by 1.3 percent or 15 cents an hour, whichever is greater.
It also approved seeking bids for four convection ovens for the middle school and high school. This will allow schools to replace fried foods with baked foods to meet school meal nutrition standards.
Randy Watson, superintendent, reviewed ACT scores for the class of 2014, comparing scores from eighth, 10th and 12th grade with ACT’s projected growth. In all categories, the average scores for the class of 2014 exceeded ACT’s expected growth.
Watson said he hopes the district will see more test score improvement as data becomes available for sixth- and seventh-grade students.
