  • McPherson’s winning ways at the Sports Field Complex ended Friday during the team’s secondround matchup against Missouri state champion Jackson, Mo., in the American Legion Junior Midwest Regional tournament.
Kansas state champion McPherson dropped its second round game to Jackson, Mo., Friday afternoon 5-2, sending the team to the losers’ bracket for the rest of the tournament.
Yet for McPherson, a trip to the losers’ bracket doesn’t mean the end of the tournament.
At the very same field last weekend, the team became the first in 33 years at the Kansas state tournament to come back from a firstround loss and win the tournament.
    Though stakes are higher.
Though a three-run difference on the box score, McPherson outhit Jackson 6-4. The team ran into errors during the fourth and fifth inning and allowed three runs during that stretch.
Jackson pitcher Gavon Turner threw six innings for the Missouri state champions, tallying five strikeouts and three walks en route to the victory.
McPherson left fielder Jack Reifschnider and catcher Cody Starkel batted in the only runs for the team.
Jackson centerfielder Triston Thele hit a two RBI doubles, which gave them the lead that they never gave up.
McPherson had two pitchers on the mound for them during the contest.
Starter Marcus McDaniels threw four and a third innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout.
The team brought in Reifschnider during the fifth inning to close the game out for McPherson, and in two and two-thirds innings, Reifschnider allowed one hit and walked three with no runs allowed. His relief work wasn’t enough though as McPherson only notched one hit while he was on the mound.
With the victory, Jackson will play (winner of North Dakota/Minnesota). In the losers bracket, McPherson played tournament host Geiger ReadyMix at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Results were not available as of press time. The winner of that game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. game today.
