Winston Harold Beam, 87, of McPherson, passed away at 1:36 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2014, while in the company of his wife at McPherson Hospital.
Winston was born on Aug. 9, 1926, in Holmesville, Nebraska, son of Bertha (Mugler) and Harold Irvin Beam.
Winston attended the King City grade school Elyria and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson in 1944. Winston enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during WW II as a T-4 Sergeant. After his service, he returned and attended McPherson College for two years and graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, in 1950.
He was a member of church of the Brethren McPherson, where he sang in the choir for 51 years and served his church in other capacities.
Winston worked for J.C. Penny as a salesman in Topeka. He then became a field representative for Equifax Services for 35 years and retired in July of 1987 from Equifax. He worked part-time for General Information Services for nine years and retired in 1996.
Winston was a member of the McPherson Kiwanis Noon Club for more than 50 years and served on the YMCA board for 13 years. He also was a member of the Senior Bridge Club, which met at the McPherson Senior Center. Through the years, Winston was known as a sports nut and enjoyed all sports, especially bowling, volleyball, tennis, softball and golf. He also liked playing cards, especially bridge.
Winston was united in marriage to Rita Evans on Oct. 13, 1956, at McPherson.
Surviving family members include his wife of over 57 years, Rita Beam, of McPherson; nephews and niece, Alan Beam (Kathy), of Burrton, Daryl Beam (Corina), of Hays, Lisa Meyer (Dave), of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Neal Beam, of McPherson; great nephews and nieces, Katie Tyler (Alex), Kelsi Beam, Travis Beam (Julie), Tyler Beam, Tanner Beam (Katie), Duncan Meyer, and Courtney Plaisted (Justin); other relatives and a host of friends.
Winston was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Royce Beam; and a great nephew, Spencer Meyer.
Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Church of the Brethren, McPherson, with Reverends Chris and Kathryn Whitacre officiating.
Private family inurnment of cremated remains will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, preceding the memorial service.
