  • The treasurer of the McPherson County Democrats is calling for the resignation of McPherson County Clerk Cathy Schmidt after names for precinct committeepersons were left off ballots in two cities.
Marlene and Berry Percival were running for committee persons in Empire Township. Their names were on the township ballot but were omitted from the city of Galva ballots. Both were elected to their positions with Marlene receiving seven votes and Berry receiving eight votes.
Ellen Neufeld was running for Superior Township committeeperson, but her name was omitted from the city of Inman ballot. She was elected to her position with three votes.
Schmidt admitted to the error. She said it was unintentional and will not happen again. However, she said she thought McPherson County Democrats Treasurer Ryon Carey was overreacting to the situation.
None of the candidates were running opposed.
Candidates for precinct committee person needed only one vote to be elected. If no one was elected to the posts, the candidates could have been appointed to the positions.
“I have already talked to the Secretary of State,” Schmidt said. “I think he is blowing this out of proportion. ... I think committee people are very important, but I don’t think this is newsworthy.”
Carey said write-in candidates could have won the election because the precinct committee candidates were left off the ballot.
He said he also was concerned because if the positions were not filled, they couldn’t be filled until after the McPherson County Democrats reorganized.
