  • McPherson High School junior Magan Alexander will have one less thing to worry about her senior year, as she made a verbal commitment to Fort Hays State University Monday.
Alexander will join the Tigers in 2016, following in the footsteps of former Bullpup standout Bethany Farres. Farres transferred to FHSU from Johnson County Community College and is in her junior year.
Alexander has been hailed by MHS coach Christy Doile as a starter for any team in the state of Kansas and is expected to make big contributions to the Bullpups in this coming season.
McPherson, who opens the season Saturday in the AVCTL Preseason Tournament in Hutchinson, is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A Division I by the Kansas Volleyball Coaches’ Association.
Alexander was a member of the 2012 state championship roster and played in 42 sets in 2013, tallying 31 kills on 72 attempts and served up 10 aces.
“Magan is an explosive outside hitter and server,” Doile said. “She has the ability to hit multiple type of sets out of the outside or middle, making her harder for blockers to defend. Her long reach and vertical make her a talented outside hitter that can also help put up a big double block in the middle.”
Alexander’s versatility is one of her big upsides for a Bullpup team that is coming off a 39-4 season and looking to improve on their Class 4A Division I state tournament showing, where they were knocked out of contention in pool play.
“In the back row rotations, she can receive as well as be an offensive threat hitting pipes or back-row attacks,” Doile said. “Our 2014 team will be depending on her for her offensive and defensive abilities, plus looking to her to add more vocal leadership.”
Alexander is the second junior member of the Bullpups to commit to a college team coming into the 2014 season. Megan Pedersen committed to the University of Missouri at Kansas City during her sophomore year.
