AUGUSTA — A hat trick plus one from McPherson High School's Darrius Armstrong propelled the Bullpups to a 10-0 shutout of Augusta Tuesday night to close out the first half of their season with a 5-3 record. Armstrong scored two goals in each half and added an assist on the final first-half goal by Connor Williams.
Rhett Edmonson's lone goal got the scoring started for Mac in the first half. Britton Haigh scored the second and ninth goals of the game, one in each half, with Devin Cape scoring the third goal of the game. McPherson led 6-0 at the break.
Luke Brossard added the final goal of the game to give the Pups the 10-goal margin of victory. In addition to Armstrong, Jael Jaime, Sammie Jaime, Williams, Edmonson and Cape each added an assist apiece. McPherson had 25 shots on goal while goalie Nathan Lloyd made zero saves.
"Tonight was a comfortable win and hopefully gave a lot of guys confidence going forward," said McPherson coach Chris Adrian. "We weren't 100 percent going into the game with Austin Monroe out with a knee injury and in addition, Tyler Hoxie and Drew Schrader only played about 20 minutes because of their minor injuries. Credit the players for stepping up big and coming out focused. I thought we dominated all phases of the game from start to finish. Noah Scott did a perfect job stepping in for Austin Monroe on defense and Darrius Armstrong showed he can be a goal scorer. We had some great combination play in this game and the highlight of the night for me was our second goal which started with us playing a ball back to our goal keeper Nathan Loyd and then building out of the back with some nice one and two touch passing resulting in a breakaway for Britton Haigh. We've now got a nice stretch without a game to heal up and get some solid practice time in to prepare for the second half of the season."
The Pups JV team won 6-0 over the Orioles. Cody Achilles and Logan Ediger each had two goals, with Florian Gergs and Zach Wash adding a goal apiece. Gergs, Ediger, Achilles and Marcel Horstkamp were credited with assists.
The Bullpups next game is not until Thursday, Sept. 28 as they will host Mulvane. The JV game gets underway at 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow at McPherson Stadium.
