There is no doubt who the best volleyball team in Class 4A DI is. There hasn’t been much of a debate dating back to last season. Defending state champions Rose Hill has another elite squad, and they let McPherson and Augusta know Tuesday night at the Roundhouse.

The Rockets remained unbeaten with straight set wins over the Bullpups and Orioles. Rose Hill dispatched Augusta 25-13, 25-10 before turning it up a notch against fifth-ranked McPherson, 25-10, 25-6.

The reputation Rose Hill has garnered over the past couple of seasons has not gone unnoticed by other teams. McPherson head coach Christy Doile believes her team needs to improve mentally as well as physically in order to compete with teams at this level.

“It’s safe to say [Rose Hill] got us out of our system, they got us out of our rhythm, and they got in our heads a little bit,” Doile said. “Some of it is due to them, and some of it is due to our mental toughness.”

The night started off well for McPherson. They jumped out to a 10-2 first set lead over Augusta before pulling away for a 25-9 win. In the second set, McPherson led 13-3 before Augusta found its groove. The Bullpups won the set 25-16, holding off a late run from the Orioles.

But Rose Hill was another story. The Rockets played like a team on another level; a team with confidence throughout the entire lineup.

Rose Hill took a 9-3 lead over McPherson in the first set, forcing Doile to use a timeout. The Rockets did not slow down from there, as they ended up winning the first set 25-10.

The second set was not pretty, and it was all Rose Hill. The Rockets led 17-1 before McPherson found any success at all. The deficit was too much to overcome, as Rose Hill took the final set, 25-6.

“We didn’t see anything unexpected, they didn’t surprise us with anything they did,” Doile said. “We have to learn from tonight.”

The Bullpups have no time to dwell over Tuesday’s tough loss. They play on Saturday at the always tough Newton Invitational, which features ranked teams in Andale, Andover Central, and Newton, along with the Bullpups.
